Getting Around Sri Lanka: Is hiring a driver the best way?

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusrssyoutubeinstagramflickrmail

Hiring driver in Sri Lanka is your fastest and easiest way to get around the island.  It is not the cheapest option, however.

As of now, Sri Lanka only has 2 highways. One from the international airport (Bandaranike International Airport) to Colombo and one from Colombo to Galle. Note that you are unable to get on and off the highway before Galle. Most of the public buses are very crowded and do not have AC and the tuk tuk drivers (which are now metered), tend to follow tourists around posing as tour guides.

Taxi’s generally have to be called ahead. What can you do? If you are short on time and want an explanation of some of the sites, please call Rechie Dullewa at +94714336374 (internationally) or email rechiedullewe@hotmail.com. He speaks fluent English and some Spanglish and is very knowledgeable about the different national parks and ancient temples. We just finished spending 10 days with him in the cultural triangle and hill country. He is a blast to hang out with and has been driving tourists around for the past 15 years.
