Accommodations in Sri Lanka: An introduction
Accommodations in Sri Lanka can vary quite a bit in terms of price and comfort. There are now hostels in Colombo for as little at US$10 a night and luxury boutique resorts for over US$1,000 a night. You should decide on your budget and comfort level before booking.
Built in 1806, this colonial masterpiece was originally the Governor’s mansion back when Sri Lanka was under British rule.
Mount Lavinia Hotel
Last year I ended up just booking this place the day before as I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to make it to Sri Lanka’s east coast. So happy to have stayed here. A fairly new resort, it is the ultimate in relaxation.

I found this place through a recommendation in Colombo. This house is massive and it has the best view of all of Kandy! The family is also very hospitable. Book directly at homestay.com

This colonial hotel was built in 1891 and still has its old colonial charm. With fireplaces through-out the facility, you are guaranteed to stay warm in these misty mountains.
The Dining room at the Grand Hotel
Another British Governor’s mansion, this colonial hotel was built in 1844. If this is your first time to Kandy, staying at this hotel is a must as it is very traditional and is centrally located.
The Queens Hotel
This hotel has excellent views. It is modern style hotel built into the rock. One can watch the monkeys or birds play in the tree tops straight from your balcony.
