Anuradhapura

Location of Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura became a great city after the arrival of the cutting from the Bodhi Tree in the 3rd century BC which is the oldest living human-tree planted in the world.

Anuradhapura

The Oldest Tree

King Pandukabhaya who established this ancient city as Sri Lanka‘s first capital in the 4th century BC.  It flourished for 1,300 years until an invasion in 993, and then was abandoned and hidden by a dense jungle for many years till it was rediscovered by the British in the 19th century.  Today it is the capital of the North Central Providence.

Excavations

Iron Age items were discovered in this area that date back as far as 900 to 600BC.

This city also had some of the most complex irrigation systems of the ancient world. Most of the great reservoir tanks still survive today, and many are the oldest surviving reservoirs in the world.

Changes Personally Witnessed

1988 was the first time I had ever visited this holy place.  I just visited it again this past December.  To my surprise, not much had changed except some renovations and a lot more monkeys.
